Run two TablePlus instances on Mac
TablePlus keeps one list of saved connections per install — client and production databases sit side by side, one accidental query away from each other. A MacDupl instance is a second, genuinely separate TablePlus, with its own connection list and its own Dock icon, running at the same time as your first. It's on MacDupl's native tier, so it ships as Beta.

What you get
- Separate connection sets. Each instance keeps its own saved connections, so a client's database credentials never sit in the same list as production.
- Separate license state. Each instance holds its own license activation and preferences, isolated from the original.
- Its own Dock icon. Colour-tinted, so a client's TablePlus and your own are one glance apart in the Dock.
- Nearly free on disk. Instances are APFS copy-on-write copies, sharing disk blocks with the original app.
Install it from the vendor's own download page, not the Mac App Store. App Store builds are sandboxed: their data lives in a shared container that a copy would still read, so they can't be cloned. MacDupl's picker grays those builds out and shows you this same advice.
TablePlus hasn't been through MacDupl's hands-on verification pass, so its status reflects the native tier's baseline Beta label, not a claim tested against TablePlus specifically. The 3-day trial shows you how it classifies on your own Mac before you buy.
- Status is “Beta” because TablePlus sits in MacDupl's native tier and hasn't individually gone through our verification pass — not a claim that it's been tested and found lacking.
- The native tier isolates by giving each instance its own user-level home directory, which is where TablePlus stores its saved connections — kept apart from the original's, not merged into one list.
How to set it up
- Pick the app
Open MacDupl and choose TablePlus from the list of apps installed on your Mac. - Name and colour it
Call it “Work”, “Personal” or a client's name, and give it one of nine icon tints. - Hit Create
About two seconds later there's a new TablePlus in your Dock — add that client's connections to the new instance — the original's saved connections and credentials stay untouched.
Questions about TablePlus
Why keep connections in separate instances instead of one folder per client?
TablePlus folders still live inside one connection list in one app — a slip of the mouse can point a query at the wrong database. A MacDupl instance is a separate app with a separate connection list, so a client's credentials are never one click away from production.
Is TablePlus verified, or Beta by default?
TablePlus is on MacDupl's native tier, labelled Beta as a whole, and it hasn't individually gone through our hands-on verification pass — so its status is the tier default, not a tested claim about TablePlus itself. Run the 3-day trial to check it on your Mac.
Does the App Store version work?
No — TablePlus's App Store build is sandboxed and can't be cloned. Install the direct download from tableplus.com, which clones normally.
Do saved connections leak between instances?
No. Each instance keeps its own isolated data directory, so saved connections, credentials and query history stay separate.
