Run two ChatGPT accounts on Mac
ChatGPT's Mac app signs into one account at a time. A MacDupl instance is a second, separate ChatGPT app — its own login, its own conversation history, its own Dock icon — running alongside your first. It's on MacDupl's native tier, so it ships as Beta.
3-day free trial · $29 once · macOS 13+ · notarized by Apple
What you get
- Separate accounts. Each instance holds its own ChatGPT login and its own conversation history.
- Separate plans. Keep a Plus or Team subscription in one instance and a personal account in another, both signed in at once.
- Its own Dock icon. Colour-tinted, so work and personal ChatGPT are one glance apart.
- Nearly free on disk. Instances are APFS copy-on-write copies, so a second ChatGPT costs almost nothing extra.
ChatGPT's Mac app runs on MacDupl's native tier, the isolation strategy behind our verified Telegram, Zoom, Tailscale, CapCut and Spotify clones — but ChatGPT itself hasn't gone through that hands-on pass yet, so it carries the tier's own “Beta” label rather than an app-specific verified one. The 3-day trial shows you exactly how your copy gets classified before you pay anything.
- ChatGPT's Mac app hasn't been through MacDupl's hands-on verification pass — it inherits the native tier's baseline Beta status rather than a claim specific to ChatGPT itself.
- Native-tier isolation gives an instance its own user-level home directory — not merely a renamed data folder — which is what keeps a second ChatGPT login separate from the first.
How to set it up
- Pick the app
Open MacDupl and choose ChatGPT from the list of apps installed on your Mac. - Name and colour it
Call it “Work”, “Personal” or a client's name, and give it one of nine icon tints. - Hit Create
About two seconds later there's a new ChatGPT in your Dock — sign into the second ChatGPT account — conversation history stays separate from the original.
Questions about ChatGPT
Why not use ChatGPT's built-in account switcher?
Switching accounts inside one app still means one app, one session, one Dock icon at a time. A MacDupl instance keeps two ChatGPT accounts open simultaneously, each with its own identity in the Dock.
Is ChatGPT verified, or just Beta because of the native tier?
Both are true at once: ChatGPT sits in MacDupl's native tier, which is labelled Beta as a whole, and it also hasn't individually gone through our hands-on verification pass yet — so its status is exactly what the tier default says, no more. The 3-day trial shows you how it behaves on your Mac before you decide.
Is my conversation history shared between instances?
No. Each instance keeps its own isolated data, so conversations, custom instructions and settings stay separate.
Does the App Store version work?
OpenAI doesn't ship ChatGPT for Mac through the App Store — it's a direct download from chatgpt.com, and that's the build MacDupl clones.
Does computer use work in a ChatGPT instance?
Expect it not to. OpenAI's computer-use helper rejects requests from apps that aren't signed by OpenAI, and an instance can't carry OpenAI's signature. That's a limit of how the helper checks signatures, not something a MacDupl update can fix, so use your original ChatGPT for computer use.
